I am an unexpected athlete.

I never saw my life going this way, yet here I am.

I didn't get here on my own...

 

As a two-time Wisconsin Ironman, finisher of over a dozen marathons,

and many other running races and biking events, I have years of trial and error in training, nutrition, and balancing stress and rest.  I’ve learned to love exercise and have been running and/or biking nearly every day for 20 years.  It started because:

I was inspired by someone else...my dad.

It's crazy to me when I think back to how I was the girl who walked the timed mile in gym class because I hated to sweat. I learned to swim when I was 40.

I never imagined that I’d be able to call myself an athlete today.

I was encouraged by others along the way...

As a wife, a mother of three, and a former foster parent,

I have learned to manage expectations and emotions coming from all directions.

From having six kids under the age of 9 in the house to now raising three teenagers,

I'm happy to say I have learned how to (usually) go to bed at night

believing I did the very best I could.

 I wasn't alone...I was supported.

Cooking for my children and my ultrarunner husband forced me

to experiment with our diet to find what works best in different seasons,

points in the training cycle, and make accommodations for chaotic schedules. 

I was celebrated in tiny ways when things I tried made a difference to the people I love.

I’ve learned how to jump-start my creativity, help my husband get to racing weight,

and teach my children to see the value in trying new things.

I never thought I'd be so interested in different strategies for nutrition and the way these affect our energy levels, mood, and our ability to flourish...yet here I am.

I was intrigued.  I still am intrigued. 

A lifelong Christian, I am keenly aware of my need for spiritual growth and guidance.

(Spirituality? YES! I believe people are most successful when they

bring their whole selves to the table. Connection to God

and awareness of spiritual gifts are critical to living a full life.) 

I was welcomed...and so I welcome others.

Maybe you've got a lot on your plate.
